Located on Mizuki Shigeru Road, which is lined with 177 bronze statues of yokai, the shrine is built in the world of the manga “Gegege no Kitaro”.
Welcome to the amazing shrine of yokai!
The shrine’s sacred body is a black granite stone about 10 feet (about 3 meters) high. The shrine was visited by Mr. Shigeru Mizuki, the author of the manga “Gegege no Kitaro,” who performed a ceremony to put his soul into the sacred object.
On New Year’s Eve 1999, the “Yokai Shrine Inauguration Ceremony” was held, and a lot of people gathered there. Then, at midnight on January 1, 2000, the Inauguration Ceremony was held to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the shrine. In addition, a 300-year-old zelkova tree is enshrined as a sacred object.

The Yokai Shrine is characterized by the purifying water of the eye-dropper and the torii gate made of cotton, and attracts yokai from all over Japan. There are so many blessings here, from prayers for success to the fulfillment of wishes, family safety, protection from bad luck, and good fortune.
Of course, visitors can also enjoy ema (votive picture tablet) and omikuji (omikuji) in the “yokai shrine style”. The ema are shaped like yokai (monsters) such as Oyaji with eyeballs and Ichikan Momen, and each yokai has a different wish. The fortune is also unique, and a yokai karakuri doll brings the fortune to the shrine while bowing and paying off the debt. Which yokai brings the fortune depends on your luck! With such a special omikuji, you may enjoy it even if it turns out to be a “big one”!
This shrine is the home of yokai on Mizuki Shigeru Road, and also the home of yokai to protect and nurture a natural environment where yokai can live comfortably. Omikuji Robot
The well-known character from “Gegege no Kitaro” carries a fortune in a capsule. When two 100-yen coins are inserted, a yokai doll appears and delivers a fortune slip and a sticker for good luck. Five different yokai dolls, including Kitaro and Neko Musume, bring good luck. The sight of these dolls will surely make you feel relaxed!
MEDAMA Oyaji Purifying Water
The hand-watering basin in the shrine serves as the purifying water for Oyaji. It is a 1.9-meter-high granite water pot that is designed to resemble Oyaji in a teacup bath.
Inside the bowl floats a sphere (38 cm in diameter, weighing about 70 kg) with an eyeball painted on it, which rotates slowly with the force of water. Anyone can touch the sphere to change its rotation and purify their hands with the flowing water beside it. Incidentally, this work was named after Mr. Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of Kitaro.
