The ruins of Yonago Castle, a National Historic Site, are valuable as a castle ruins where visitors can learn about the structure of the castle, as the stonewalls and foundation stones retain their original form. In addition, many documents and pictorial materials related to Yonago Castle have been handed down in good condition.
In 1601, when Nakamura Kazutada moved to Yonago as the lord of Hoki-no-kuni, he started to build Yonago Castle. In 1591, a four-storied castle tower had already been built by Hiroie Yoshikawa, a lord of 120,000 koku, but Kazutada built another five-storied tower, making it the most famous castle in the San-in region, both in name and in reality. However, the castle was sold for a small sum of money at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912), and now only the stonewalls remain.
The summit of Yonago Castle Ruins commands a panoramic view of the national park Daisen, the Shimane Peninsula, the Nakaumi Sea, and Yonago City, making it a scenic spot where citizens can take a relaxing stroll.
